For fans of Tolkien, 2017 shall prove to be fulfilling. There is a new book on the way and a movie being put together.
The next Tolkien film we see won’t have heroic exploits from Aragorn or Legolas. Instead, this will be a film based upon the life and creative genius of the one who brought us Middle-Earth. Early reports indicate that James Strong will be directing. His resume includes two episodes of “Downton Abbey,” and the movie “United.” The film is to cover his early years, including his contribution to the WWI – an event that inspired the Middle-Earth saga.
Next noteworthy item is Beren and Luthien.
The tale of Beren and Luthien was, or became, an essential element in the evolution of The Silmarillion, the myths and legends of the First Age of the World conceived by J.R.R. Tolkien. Returning from France and the battle of the Somme at the end of 1916, he wrote the tale in the following year. Essential to the story, and never changed, is the fate that shadowed the love of Beren and Luthien: for Beren was a mortal man, but Luthien was an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, in deep opposition to Beren, imposed on him an impossible task that he must perform before he might wed Luthien.
There is another book I don’t want to leave out. It came out years ago, but was amazing.
The Children of Hurin. If you plan on grabbing Beren and Luthien this summer, while you wait, grab this one first.
That’s all the for now. More will follow when more movie news develops.
